Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology is a generic term for devices and modifications that help overcome or remove a disability. Products range from alternative input devices to customisable software. Devices such as switches, alternative keyboards and alternative mice can enable a user to access and use a computer whilst software such as text-to-speech, speech recognition and on-screen keyboards and word prediction can help with creating, deciphering and accessing information on the computer. For example, people with hidden disabilities such as dyslexia can find text-to-speech software invaluable for reading and spelling programs useful when writing text. Most software is compatible with, and provides enhancements to, user’s existing software packages.
