Digital divide confirmed by Ministers

Our Chairman, Lord Willis of Knaresborough, recently asked Education Ministers what their understanding was of the number of children unable to access the internet at home.

Lord Hill confirmed that the Department for Education estimates that around 15 per cent of households with children currently lack access to the internet. This figure is based on data from the Ipsos Mori technology tracker which indicates that internet access amongst UK households with children (aged 0-15) increased from about 77 per cent in January 2010 to 85 per cent in January 2011. Take up of internet access remains strongly correlated with household income with only 68 per cent of households with children eligible for free school meals having access to the internet at home.
