Spring 2010

Welcome to the spring 2010 e-Learning Foundation newsletter
It may be only two months since Christmas, but now is the time for schools to start planning for their next cohort of pupils to have 1:1 access, at school and at home, from September 2010. Grant availability will be confirmed within the next month or so, but with computer prices continuing to fall many schools are finding they can afford to make 1:1 provision within their own budgets and with support from parents.

The coming year is full of uncertainties but fighting the digital divide cannot go on hold.

Story competition for pupils
Entries are now open to Primary and Secondary School pupils to enter our “Me and My Computer” story competition. They can use any medium they choose -Word, Powerpoint, podcast, video etc. There are some great hi-tech goodies for the winners.
Closing date is 12th April.

Every pupil online - not if, not when, but how?
The e-Learning Foundation will visit Bristol for its annual Spring conference on May 12th. This year's conference, dubbed ‘Keeping Up with the Future’ will cover many of the challenges facing schools in their quest to provide 1:1 access.

Affiliate school forum launched
Our affiliated schools can now access an online forum to ask advice, share experiences and debate the strategic and practical aspects of one to one access, digital inclusion and related pedagogy.

Students take up individual support grants in Cheshire
6th form students at Lysander Community High School in Warrington, Cheshire, will benefit from the e-Learning Foundation’s Individual Support Grant.

First school signs up for new cash collection service
St Mary’s Catholic College in Blackpool is the first school to benefit from being able to collect cash donations from parents using a payment card. The service uses the PayPoint network, that many families may already use to pay their utility and phone bills, and provides a convenient and secure method of collecting donations.

DSGi back the e-Learning Foundation
A collection of two cool guitar badges and two mobile phone charms are now available at Currys, Dixons Travel and PC World stores across the UK for the recommended donation of just £1. All funds raised will be split between the e-Learning Foundation and Lifelites, a charity which provides education and entertainment technology for use in children’s hospices. Please spread the word and help us help children across the UK.

Many children are in danger of remaining digitally excluded
Unless more action is taken, children living in the poorest households in this country may never fully engage with the digital economy unless action is taken to ensure they have home access to the internet, warns the e-Learning Foundation.
